I have to say that I bought this book about two years ago and only recently got around to reading it in full after several false starts. The false starts are very telling. I bought the book because I had found my way to current "weird fiction" authors, such as Caitlin R. Kiernan, Laird Barron, Jordan Krall, Thomas Ligotti, Mercedes M. Yardley and others. I found that Chambers' name came up often in discussions and there was almost a cult of followers of "The King in Yellow." I know that there are many references to "Carcosa," and "The Yellow King" and other subjects mentioned by Chambers in his book. The final push for me was the HBO series, "True Detective," which mentions these terms throughout the first season.I have to admit, I don't get it. I thought "The King in Yellow" was, yes, weird, but I didn't understand all the ballyhoo about it. Certainly H.P. Lovecraft is deserving of his cult following. After all, he was prolific and did build a true mythos in his work. He has inspired/influenced many of today's horror and weird fiction writers.
I just didn't find myself all that drawn in by this book, these stories. I guess it's my loss because I certainly love the writings of many authors who claim to have been influenced by Chambers. I can easily say that reading "The King in Yellow" added nothing to my appreciation of these current authors' works, and there is no reason to seek out this book, unless, like me, you can tend toward being a bit obsessive in wanting to be informed about the authors whom you are reading.
So, three stars, two for the story and one for the reputation and influence it has had.

The King in Yellow by Robert W Chambers Annotated Edition Lovecraftian Librarium edition by Robert W Chambers Keybook Publishing Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The premise of the story was OK. The twist to the story was good. What put off was the style of writing.
Dated and incoherent.
The first story, The Repairer of Reputations, is one of the best short stories I've ever read. Quite inventive and keeps you reading. The rest of the stories are good, and there are even some romantic stories in this collection. I thought the whole book was going to be of the suspense type so the romantic stories surprised me, kind of incongruous. However, he has a deft hand at romance.
I was not truly impressed with the stories in this book, perhaps because the concept(s) are no longer fresh. Some of the stories were engaging and some, in the second half as noted by earlier reviewers, were not so much. As the product of an earlier age it is interesting and informative to see what things were held important at that time. That said, I'm not sorry I read it.
